Naziru Mikail is an experienced multimedia journalist, media manager, and researcher. He is currently a PhD Fellow at the Communication and Media Research Institute of the University of Westminster in London. His research interests include the role of Artificial Intelligence in journalism, digital news business, media sustainability, new and emerging revenue models, and digital disruptions. He is also a director and co-founder of the Abuja-based Centre for Media, Policy, and Accountability (CMPA), which promotes democratic governance through high-quality research, training, and advocacy. Naziru has over 15 years of experience in journalism and media leadership at both international and local levels. His career includes senior roles at the BBC World Service in the UK and Nigeria, including editor of its Nigeria operations. Until September 2024, he was the Editor-in-Chief and Group Executive Director of Daily Trust, one of Nigeria’s most trusted and widely-read newspapers. He has extensively covered African stories, including elections in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana, as well as conflicts in South Sudan and the Sahel region.
Beyond journalism, Naziru has extensive project management expertise, having played a key role in establishing Trust TV and radio stations and leading the digital transformation of the Daily Trust media group. His dedication to sharing knowledge is evident through his regular involvement in training and mentorship programmes. His consultancy experience includes working with both public and private organisations, such as the Kaduna State Government, the Pew Research Centre, the MacArthur Foundation, Tropical General Investment Group, Pink Arena Foundation, and the Centre for Democracy and Development. Naziru attended the Open School’s AI Literacy Fellowship for African Policymakers.
He holds a BA in mass communication from Bayero University in Nigeria, an MA in digital journalism from New York University (where he was awarded the 2018 World Journalism Fellowship), and a degree in media and society from the University of Leicester. He is also an alumnus of Lagos Business School, BBC Academy, and the US Knight Centre for Journalism in the Americas.
